One of the ways that I know that I am feeling better is by the amount of time that I sleep. Melanie loves sleeping and likes to sleep in. She is a night owl and is not fond of waking up in the morning. Xavier is like her and does not like getting up in the morning. Olivier pops up in the morning and he is ready to go. I like staying up late and do not mind getting up early. In academia I would start running a lot of experiments at 5 or 6am in the morning until the end of the day. While working at the hospital I would start at 6am. If I know that there is going to be a heavy snowfall I will make sure I get up early in order to shovel it. During the last year I had to sleep at least 9 hours a day and upwards to 10 with naps during the day. Each day was exhausting and I did not realize how bad it was. Prior to cancer I would work a minimum of 11 hours a day and over the past year I worked just 8 hrs. I have slowly been increasing the hours that I work and I have adapted to it all right.
Things are starting out much better now.Mel for the last 18 months has been doing most of the work around the house, but now I am doing much more. She seems to sound guilty when she asks me to do extra stuff, but if I am capable, I do not mind. She has been asked to do a lot and I need to get the division of work back to 50/50. Where I can supervise her 50% of the time to do work and she can do it independently 50% of the time.
Today has been a very long day as both Melanie and I have worked well past regular hours. With things due, there are occasions when you need to work extra. Normally though we do not both work extended hours on the same night, so the kids have at least one parent available. Today is an exception as we both have work deadlines.
We have been having some electrical issues since last Friday and it was resolved today because one of my employees sent her uncle over, who is an electrician. He took some time but came up with a solution to stabilize the situation so I can work in my office. I am grateful for the friendships I have made at work and for the continued assistance that I receive from people whenever I am in need of some help. I appreciate that people care enough to look out for me and offer assistance.Over the weekend we had someone offer to come over and help out with the electrical issue. They had a cold at the time and were told that they could not come as I am still immunocompromised. Today a friend from work offered to come by and help out. He did a rapid-test before he was going to come. It came back positive. Moral of the story is that you probably should not offer to come over, as there is a high likelihood that you will test positive. There is a 66% chance that if you want to come here to help me fix electrical problems you will test positive.
