April 16th – Hospital Recovery

When you do not wear your glasses for days it has quite the impact on your vision. I have not had my glasses since Monday and Mel brought them to me today, I put them on and I have had trouble actually focusing on my laptop. It does not matter if I increase the size of my font or not, it is all blurry, but as I keep them on it seems to be getting better as I adjust to it. It is the middle distance of things where things are a bit blurry. Last night I was able to drink both of my boosts which are approximately 550 calories each and the taste is severely muted and the texture seems to be ok. My RBC has increased from 85 to 100 and the WBC has increased from 0.2 to 1.4 this morning. A lot of my levels are increasing, but some are still a bit low. The doctor and my friend arrived this morning to see how I was doing and the doctor said that if I had not come in that day the next day I would have had to come in by ambulance. I was so dehydrated that I could not manage it at home and that I required care from the hospital. Good thing I always listen to Mel. She has probably saved me a lot of grief more times than I can count and all she gets in return is a grumpy old broken man. I am pretty sure I got the better side of the deal. The doctor ordered a physiotherapist assessment to make sure that I could function at home. He originally wanted me to walk to the door of my room and I did. I also told him I could do more so he made me walk the full floor. I am not going to lie, by the end of the whole walk I was a bit fatigued. I am not sure if I am in the state right now that I could walk very long distances. Once we hear back from what the doctors say in Spain I may end up getting a travel powered wheelchair. I do not want to be dependent on someone pushing me around all of the time. Xavier easily pushed me around all of the time and he was really good at it by the end, but Melanie was not as good at it.

The trip to Barcelona has taught the kids to be more independent and to be able to rely on each other. They had to share a room and manage their routines. Once we returned home Mel had told them that they need to make sure that the kitchen was cleaned and they have done a great job of it. Mel asked if they wanted anyone to come supervise and help them out at night and they both told her no. They have their own routine that they do and they have not been fighting too much. Since Mel has spent most of her time here they have been home alone from the time they get home from school till Mel returns. They need to make dinner for themselves and make sure everything is done on their own. Xavier works out and catches up on the projects that he has been behind on. Mel asked Olivier what he has been telling his friends he did and he replied walked around a lot and ate. Those are the two things he remembered as that is what we did. Barcelona is a very walkable city and there were a lot of great places within a 15 minute walk, so that is what we ended up doing, or taking the metro to a place and walking 5 minutes to places.

I would also like to thank everyone that has provided food for the family since I have been away. As no one seems to think that Mel can provide sustenance to the kids we have had food drop offs almost daily while I have been in the hospital. We also have a freezer full of food as well that the boys can heat up and both of them are pretty good chefs as well. Mel and I will need to do groceries at some point as well and I will need to wear a mask when I go out in public for the foreseeable future so I do not catch anything. With such a weak immune system I need to be careful or I will be hospitalized again with all of the sick people. What I have learned from this week is to accept help early at the first signs of symptoms because I cannot power my way through anything. Next week tryouts start and I will not be permitted to attend so I will not really know how he is doing. I know a lot of players and parents so hopefully they will give me some updates on it.
