July 20th – Back when it was easy

Posted on 2026-07-202026-07-20 By Q No Comments on July 20th – Back when it was easy

I am a bit surprised that my mother has not called me today and now that I think of it, we probably should have gone over to my parents for dinner but things were a bit hectic and we were not able to go. I am not sure what she would have made for me today, as what I would have requested would have been grilled. I would have been in the mood for Vietnamese food, but we had too many leftovers and we wanted to get through those.  Last night at midnight the boys rushed to my bedroom to make sure that they said happy birthday to me before their mother did. It was a race to see who could say it first. Birthdays are something that I never really celebrated growing up. It was quite rare that we had a birthday party where we invited my friends over. I do remember asking my parents, but as it is in the summer it is far more difficult to reach out to friends. Especially when communication channels are not like they are now. My friends would also not necessarily be around and I am not sure if it is a culture thing or not, but it as not something that we actually really celebrated. I can not actually remember a single gift that I may have received as a birthday gift, nor do I remember any birthday gifts that my sister might have received. Tim is a totally different story altogether because he was not held to the same standard as my sister and myself and I think that they spoiled him a bit more because he is the baby of the family. I remember eating cake, and I am sure that they gave me red envelopes perhaps, which I would have most likely went and squandered. I tend to like my birthdays lowkey, but this weekend I saw it as an opportunity to have my pig roast. Otherwise my preference would be a quiet day. Xavier takes after me and he wants his birthday to be extremely low key to the point that no one even knows or celebratees it. Olivier wants friends over or to do something with them.

I was still a bit tired today and I drove Xavier to his athletic therapy appointment and we stopped at Food Basic on the way back home so we could buy some things for dinner and buy some cases of Eska water as it was on sale. It is one of the only bottled waters that Olivier will drink. He is extremely picky and when we are at a hotel he will not even brush his teeth with hotel water, and will only use Eska water. He can taste the difference in most of the waters and it bugs him. Olivier and Mel will only drink filtered water from our fridge, while Xavier and myself will drink tap water. My energy levels are still recovering from the weekend, and yesterday did not really help. I am pushing myself eating and I think that tonight I went a bit too far and ended up throwing up a bit of mucous again. I am not sure exactly what the trigger for this is, but I know that I took a couple of bites too much after dinner tonight and I think that I paid for it a bit. Even now i still feel full. I have been thirsty all day and have had lots of drinks throughout the day. The neuropathy is not as bad today and it is getting better, and I have not been too cold. I am looking forward to us getting the washroom downstairs renovated so that we have the steam shower again. I really miss having the warmth of the steam shower. It was so nice and it is summer now so it is not too bad but I do miss it.

I finally got my new schedule for chemo and now I will have my chemo next Friday. I am not sure how I feel about having my appointments on Friday. I think that I am going to see if I can get some of them moved as we are in a hockey tournament in August and it will not allow me to drive to the tournament if I am in treatment. I am going to try and request that I do not have treatments on Friday as we tend to travel on those days and I do not want to do it then. We still have not heard back ever since our contact does not work there anymore so we have emailed the international relations person to see what they have to say about all of this. We have the money earmarked for the trip, so if it is beneficial I think that we should go again and ditch the kids at home. Their combined age is 25, which is more than enough to stay home alone. My mom would come here and live with them and cook for them. That is what they would probably prefer as opposed to going to one of the grandparents but we will cross that bridge if we go back to Spain. I just need someone to reply back to me.
