Generally I have been provided freedom to work how I want and provided leeway to do things the way that I want to. I am not always one that abides by the rules if they do not make sense to me. Strong leadership makes such a big difference in the work place in stablizing the team. When you have weak leadership it is very difficult to work and you will eventually see an exodus of all the good people. It is important to create a supportive culture where people feel valued and appreciated. During some of my random reading of things today I had come across an article where they discussed people and how you treat others. Something that came up was you could tell the character of someone by how they treat people that can do nothing for them. Generally people treat those above them better as they are trying to get something, while those below them might not be treated well. Good people treat everyone the same regardless of what their status is. Something that has always annoyed me were leaders who treated their reports without empathy. If you treat people well it comes back. It costs nothing to be nice to people. There are some really sad and depressing commercials that I like to watch sometimes, and they are generally Asian life insurance commercials. A lot of the countries practice Buddhism, so the commercials are centered around servitude attitudes for others and helping out people even when you have nothing. Some of it is a bit sad because it shows people struggling and always helping out others. One of the core tenets is by helping others, showing compassion for others as if their troubles were your own. You should actively try and bring joy to others without expecting things in return. I think that this is something that leaders should do, show empathy for everyone and understand their perspective and try to bring them success without anything in return. Leaders who lack empathy create a toxic environment and it is always sad to see good people leave jobs that they at one point enjoyed.

Last night when we were sitting around the kids made a comment. I can not remember what we were talking about, but they remembered stories that I have told them about when I was younger and played sports. When I was in university I use to play on various soccer team. I was not good, I was just extremely fast and most of the time I played as a striker. I also played goalie at times as I was athletic enough and had experience playing goalie in hockey. I use to always have different coloured contacts and while living in Ottawa I had white contacts that made my eyes look like they have cataracts. I went to play with a team where no one knew me that my friend had played on. We told them that I was blind, but I was really good. They asked how did I expect to stop the ball and I had asked, did they not play with bells on the ball to hear it? They were not too impressed but they needed a goalie and I said that it was fine that I could hear them running and their footsteps. After a couple of shots in warmup I think that they caught on that we were messing with them, but it amuses me that the kids remembered me telling them this story. The kids have not seen much of me playing sports, Xavier remembers going to watch me play hockey a couple of times, but I do not think he has a memory of how I was or how I did. I know that the kids like to hear stories about us and we tend to tell them various stories at different times.

Last night I continued my routine of getting up in the middle of the night because my bladder forces me to pee constantly all of the time. It could be because I spend a lot of time making sure that I am hydrated and it is something that I will continue to do. I can fall asleep right away if I do not eat, but last night for the second time when I woke up I decided that I wanted to eat and then that will keep my up for about 30 minutes or so. I think that what I will try this evening is try and drink half of the boost and then try and go back to bed and then have the second half when I get up again. When I do not eat or drink at night I seem to be able to still eat quite a bit, but I am still having some issues with textures that makes eating a bit more difficult. I think that things will get better this weekend and hopefully it is good for next week. I know that with chemo things get worse, so I need to make sure that I am in a good spot prior to going through treatment again. I will see how things are tracking this time throughout. Fatigue has been a bit more of a problem as I have been more tired this week compared to last week. I am not sure if it is due to sleep or cumulative effort over the week but I have been trying to push myself more and more and try not to use the wheelchair if I can get away with it. What it means though is sometimes I am tired prior to myself getting up. Some of the fatigue may also be due to the failed injection from last week. We will see when I get the injection this week from the nurse and see how I do.

With Mel gone this weekend it is just the boys and myself. I will need to make sure that I manage my energy properly. There is a bunch of things that I need to do tomorrow, but unfortunately I do not actually know what needs to be done, so hopefully Mel tells me. I need to drive Olivier somewhere for a sleepover and I am hoping that he has packed up things. I can help him pack, but I am not sure if there I actually know everything that he needs. Xavier is supposed to go to his cousins birthday party and bring gifts, but all of the gifts seem to be laid out on the dining room table and are not wrapped or anything. I have no clue what needs to be done and will wait for further instructions. As it is the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend, I plan to watch F1 and relax. There are some things that I may do, but I can not necessarily go do too much unless I bring Xavier along. I need to make sure that I manage energy levels properly, because if things go awry there are times where it is just myself. I should be able to do it well as long as I am careful, which everyone knows being cautious and not doing foolish things is a strength of mine.

Q

I have been lucky throughout my career that for the most part the leaders that I have reported to have been excellent.
